Cerevastatin is a specific inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. HMG-CoA reductase is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early step in cholesterol biosynthesis. Cerivastatin was withdrawn from the market due to reports of fatal rhabdomyolysis.
